The Island of the Dolls

Location: Xochimilco, Mexico City

This place on the first site will seem strange to every visitor though it’s sad background story will increase your interest.  The place can be found between the canals of Xochimilco, just south of Mexico City. It is locally known as Isla de las Munecas, translated as Island of the Dolls. The island is maintained that way in order to tribute a little girl’s soul who lost her life due to strange mishap. The place consists of thousands of creepy dolls tied to the trees, lying on the ground and everywhere else.


Catacombs of Paris or Crypt of the Sepulchral Lamp

Location: Paris, France

Known as Catacombes de Paris in French, the place is an underground 18th-century ossuary. It can be found in the abandoned open-pit mine of the Tombe-Issoire district. You must be questioning, why the place has been added to the list? Answer to this will shock you, more like creep you out. The place consists of remains of nearly 7 million folks in a small part of a tunnel network. It was created as a result of sanitation problems which were due to the overcrowding in Paris cemeteries. Yes, you read it right! The underground network is equipped with bones of dead Parisians which were removed from their graves. Their souls must be really pissed!


Socotra

Location: Island between Guardafui Channel and the Arabian Sea

Next on the list is the largest of four islands in the Socotra archipelago. It is a part of an archipelago in the Indian Ocean. It has been added to the list as it is home to an elevated figure of endemic species. To be precise, nearly a third of its plant life is endemic meaning found nowhere else on the earth. On the island most noted are the dragon’s blood trees. Don’ they look like flying saucers floating on trunks? Take a look.


Mir mine

Location: Mirny, Sakha Republic, Russia

Also recognized as Mirny Mine, it is noted among the largest man-made excavated holes in the world. It is an unusual open-pit Kimberlite Diamond mine. It has a depth of more than 525 meters with a diameter of 1,200 meters. There is also news that it has sucked in few helicopters from the sky although none of the allegations were confirmed.


Caño Cristales

Location: Serrania de la Macarena, Meta, Colombia.

The exceptional biological wonder is a Colombian river which is noted for its striking colors. It is also identified as River of Five Colors and the Liquid Rainbow. The river can be seen with diverse colors including yellow, green, blue, black, and especially red from July end through November. The color change is due to species of plants called Macarenia Clavigera that are lined up on the riverbed.
